UCL has recently been successful in two large awards with rapid MR imaging components. One award provides £10 million to develop better tools and imaging techniques that will improve the success of surgery and other therapies on unborn babies in collaboration with KU Leuven, Great Ormond Street Hospital and University College London Hospital. The other award, £5.3million from the Medical Research Council, will fund the installation of a clinical SPINlab MRI Hyperpolarizer for imaging of metabolic activity.
UCL is seeking a post-doctoral research associate (PDRA) to facilitate these studies, implement and develop rapid imaging methods. For the fetal imaging, the aim is to provide clinical MR images that will support diagnosis and aid subsequent interventions. The MR images are intended to provide anatomical and functional information of the maternal and fetal anatomy, and localization of the placenta in relation to maternal landmarks. These will assist with safe, optimal port placement to maximize access and the working volume of imaging probes and instruments during subsequent invasive therapeutic procedures.
For the Hyperpolarizer project, the limited lifetime of the hyperpolarized compounds necessitates rapid imaging. The emphasis at UCL will be on the applications of these methods to revolutionize diagnosis, risk stratification and therapy for people with cancer, initially aiming to benefit prostate cancer patients.
The funding provides an exciting opportunity for a PDRA at the interface between rapid imaging techniques, novel applications and clinical patient imaging. In collaboration with existing staff, the PDRA will be expected to implement techniques from the literature or collaborating sites and have a good understanding of MR sequences in practical applications.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in MR Physics and a PhD or equivalent research experience in MRI physics, biomedical engineering, or a comparable subject, strong expertise in programming or using high-level languages or packages (e.g. C/C++, Matlab, OsiriX) and awareness of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and ethics issues.
