Project name: Gas turbine gas path diagnostics and prognostics
Sponsored by: Yhis project is sponsored by Manx Utilities (MU), UK, this studentship will provide a bursary of up to £10,000p.a. (tax free)* for three years
This research is organized jointly with Manx Utilities and Isle of Man, UK. Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in the Centre for Propulsion Engineering, Cranfield University, in the area of gas path diagnostics and prognostics.
Cranfield has developed a unique methodology and software to analyze the health of gas path components of gas turbine engines. The research in this area at Cranfield will be a good starting point for the proposed project for MU, an industrial sponsor of the project. The objective of the proposed research is to further develop the methodology in the area of gas path diagnostics and prognostics and apply the technology to the health analysis and prediction of the LM2500+ industrial gas turbine engines operated in MU. The critical components for the diagnostic and prognostic analysis will be the compressors and turbines. This is to support the condition-based maintenance in MU with the objective to improve the availability and reduce the maintenance costs of the engines.
The developed engine diagnostic and prognostic modules will be implemented into Cranfield Pythia gas turbine performance, diagnostics and lifing software in order that the engine field data can be used directly for the analysis.
Close communication with the industrial sponsor is expected and regular visits to the company will be funded by the project to assist the student to get first-hand information and experience of gas turbine operation.

Project Name : Vertical motion of the Australian plate
Studentship / Scholarship Eligibility and Coverage:
Description:
It is now very important to examine the plate position and its characteristics for forecasting the Earthquake. The ongoing motion of Australia’s crust is dominated by horizontal tectonic motion of approximately 6 cm/yr towards the northeast. This motion is relatively well-constrained by geodetic measurements including GPS, VLBI and SLR (Altamimi et al., 2012; Argus and Heflin, 1995; Tregoning et al., 2013). Recent analysis of GPS data observed across the continent reveals a large portion of the Australian Plate (excluding the SE region) is deforming at < 0.2 mm/yr, making it one of the most stable crustal regions in the world (Tregoning et al., 2013). Non-linear post-seismic relaxation is however clearly evident along the along the east coast of Australia, occurring in response to the 2004 Macquarie ridge earthquake.
By contrast, the vertical motion of the Australian continental crust is much less well known and observations and theory appear to be in conflict. Recent GPS measurements have suggested the vertical motion of the crust at about a dozen sites across Australia is between zero and -1 mm/yr (Altamimi et al., 2011; Burgette et al., 2013; King et al., 2012; Santamaria-Gomez et al., 2012). By contrast, large scale geophysical models and tectonic theory suggest the motion of the crust should be much closer to zero or slightly positive (Mitrovica and Milne, 2002; Tamisiea and Mitrovica, 2011). If the observations are correct this suggests the existence of an unknown large-scale geophysical phenomena; if the observations are biased they will in turn bias estimates of sea level change around the Australian coastline and suggest implications for such measurements globally.

Summary of the Scholarship:
Institute: University of Manchester

Application Deadline: Sunday, May 31, 2015
Project Name :
Project Details:
The scope of natural fibers for technical textiles and smart textiles applications is advancing now a days. The investigations of the sensor and actuator mechanisms of the range of natural cellulosic fibers and yarns open up multilevel multilayer constructed forms of varying rigidity and drape to form structural ‘membranes’ for architectural environments; although not limited to due to the scope of end textiles and applications ranging from architecture, automotive to fashion. The requirement of synthetic yarns is to ensure responsive mode can take place within these fabricated multilayer forms but must allow for comparative testing between these and their natural counterparts.
The production of constructed woven textiles allows for more than one layer of fabric to be produced within the weaving cycle. The justification for multilevel multilayer textile forms is to enhance the overall structural integrity, support the requirement and production of shaped textile forms, and take advantage of hybrid materials and their inherent characteristics upon the overall performance and shape. To utilize these parameters and expand upon the characteristic of hybrid constructed materials within a constructed material that responds to environmental stimuli sees the utilization and investigation of varying natural cellulosic fibers and synthetic yarns – Ultimately, if the natural cellulosic yarn can produce similar inherent sensor and actuator properties to their synthetic counterparts than the utilization of natural yarns is preferred when considering both the environmental impact from the placement of constructed natural materials within and the impact of the environment upon the natural material forms.

Scholarship Summary:
Scholarship Coverage:
The award will be subject to Grant Agreement between UCL, Historic Royal Palaces and IBM T.J. Watson Research Center.
For details you can visit : http://www.seaha-cdt.ac.uk/opportunities/eligibility-criteria/
Scholarship Details:
This is a project of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Science and Engineering in Arts, Heritage and Archaeology (SEAHA) in collaboration with IBM T.J. Watson Research Center and this is co-funded by Historic Royal Palaces.
The main focus of this project is the historical textile tapestry collections at Hampton Court Palace and its exposure to environmental risks may result in structural deterioration potentially leading to loss of affected areas. The aim of this project is to find out how humidity and temperature influence the stress and strain distribution in hanging historic textiles to inform their preservation.
This project will investigate cutting edge real-time in-situ tri-axial strain monitoring sensors to provide data to inform analytical modelling of tapestries using Finite Elements and explicit mathematical formulations together with modern Dynamic Equilibrium methods used in fabric simulations and controlled laboratory testing.
The following concrete research objectives are of interest:
This exciting project will provide the successful candidate with a wide range of engineering, modelling, material science, environmental science as well as professional skills to develop their future career in a wide variety of multidisciplinary environments ranging from academia and conservation to engineering consultancy. The successful candidate will have a good first degree with a strong analytical modelling background in a relevant discipline such as engineering, physics or material science but also conservation, heritage science or architecture.

- What are the most appropriate analytical techniques to model this relationship?
- Can model-based simulations inform the optimum environmental conditions for the protection of historic tapestries?
- How can the analytical model inform current tapestry conservation methods, such as ‘structural stitching’?
