The University offers a range of scholarships for Bangladeshi students who show exceptional academic potential starting a postgraduate Taught Masters program at the University of Sheffield in September 2015.

Bangladesh Sheffield Scholarships 2015


We are pleased to offer the Bangladesh Sheffield Scholarship to Bangladeshi students starting a Taught Masters programme in September 2015.
The scholarships are:
  • £2,000 if your tuition fees are between £14,500 and £16,500
or
  • £2,500 if your tuition fees are £16,501 and upwards
Unless
  • You are a student of MSc in Global Marketing Management, or any of our MSc Nanofolio courses jointly run with the University of Leeds. Under these circumstances your Scholarship will be £1,250 only, the £2,000 and £2,500 discounts above will not apply.
Eligibility and Award Criteria:
  • You must hold an offer of a study place and begin your postgraduate Taught Masters program in September 2015.
  • You must be a national or permanently domiciled of Bangladesh.
  • You must be self-funded and classified as overseas for fee purposes.
  • The scholarships will be awarded automatically – no application is required.
  • The scholarships will take the form of a tuition fee reduction only.
  • The scholarships are for full-time and part-time students only. Students studying via Distance Learning are not eligible for the scholarships.
  • Part-time students will receive the full value of a one year of scholarship split pro rata over the duration of an equivalent single full-time academic year.
  • The scholarships will not be awarded where partial funding is applicable from an external body* and there is an agreement already in place between the external body and the University of Sheffield to offer a tuition fee discount to the student.
  • The Scholarship is for each year of the Taught Masters Program, however it is not available for each year of a New Route PhD course. The scholarship is only available for the first year of study.
* Government or governmental organization – international, national or regional; Research council; Charity; private enterprise; or any similar organization.

There is one award available for individuals with a strong academic background beginning their postgraduate study at the University of Sheffield.

The University of Sheffield does not offer research studentships specifically for Bangladeshi students. There are, however, studentships and funding for which students from Bangladesh can apply.

Project Name : Vertical motion of the Australian plate

Description:
It is now very important to examine the plate position and its characteristics for forecasting the Earthquake. The ongoing motion of Australia’s crust is dominated by horizontal tectonic motion of approximately 6 cm/yr towards the northeast. This motion is relatively well-constrained by geodetic measurements including GPS, VLBI and SLR (Altamimi et al., 2012; Argus and Heflin, 1995; Tregoning et al., 2013). Recent analysis of GPS data observed across the continent reveals a large portion of the Australian Plate (excluding the SE region) is deforming at < 0.2 mm/yr, making it one of the most stable crustal regions in the world (Tregoning et al., 2013). Non-linear post-seismic relaxation is however clearly evident along the along the east coast of Australia, occurring in response to the 2004 Macquarie ridge earthquake.
By contrast, the vertical motion of the Australian continental crust is much less well known and observations and theory appear to be in conflict. Recent GPS measurements have suggested the vertical motion of the crust at about a dozen sites across Australia is between zero and -1 mm/yr (Altamimi et al., 2011; Burgette et al., 2013; King et al., 2012; Santamaria-Gomez et al., 2012). By contrast, large scale geophysical models and tectonic theory suggest the motion of the crust should be much closer to zero or slightly positive (Mitrovica and Milne, 2002; Tamisiea and Mitrovica, 2011). If the observations are correct this suggests the existence of an unknown large-scale geophysical phenomena; if the observations are biased they will in turn bias estimates of sea level change around the Australian coastline and suggest implications for such measurements globally.

PhD Position in Nanotechnology at Aarhus University, Denmark

Details of Research Project:

Project name : Surface science studies of reducible metal-oxides.

Students who are qualified in physics, chemistry or nanotechnology students with an interest in atomic-scale characterization of surfaces and have a recent MSc degree are invited to send their application for an open PhD position in surface physics and nanotechnology at the Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center (iNANO), Aarhus University, Denmark.

The successful candidate will be appointed  at the Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) group at Aarhus University wheres/he will join a team working with surface science characterization of anatase TiO2 model catalysts using Scanning Probe Microscopy (STM, noncontact-AFM), and other surface science equipment.

Students must  participate at experiments at local (ASTRID2) and international synchrotron facilities (e.g. MAX-IV laboratory, Sweden etc.). The project also jointly involves  with industrial partners and several leading international universities and research laboratories of the world.

Eligibility:

There are two types of program. Applicants should have -
  1. masters degree for 3-year PhD program, or
  2. bachelor degree with 4-years of studies for 4-year PhD program

with a major of physics, chemistry or nanotechnology with an excellent (Top 10%) and documented exam record. students should also have documentation of language skills (IELTS > 6.5, TOEFL > 560 or equivalent).  Candidates with strong knowledge in solid state/condensed matter physics, physical chemistry, surface science or equivalent will be favored.
